TCWCT Empowering Schoolgirls with Menstrual Health: A Milestone in India's Health Mission

On November 2, 2024, the Union Health Ministry of India took a transformative step forward by officially approving the “Menstrual Hygiene Policy for School-Going Girls.” This policy, shaped in response to a Supreme Court directive from April 2023, addresses longstanding challenges in menstrual health awareness, stigma reduction, and accessibility for young schoolgirls. By doing so, it ensures that female students across government and government-aided schools have access to safe, sanitary facilities and are encouraged to adopt sustainable menstrual hygiene practices. This initiative holds the potential to uplift millions of young girls, empowering them to pursue education and engage in daily activities without the limitations and anxieties often associated with menstruation.

The Children’s Welfare Charitable Trust (TCWCT) is closely aligned with this mission and stands committed to supporting the goals of the Union Health Ministry and Ministry of Women and Child Development (WCD). Through a strong alliance with these government bodies, TCWCT has been actively involved in health and educational initiatives that target adolescents, young mothers, and underserved children. By focusing on these critical demographic groups, TCWCT aims to create a foundation for a healthier, more informed generation and to break down the barriers that impact children’s health, education, and long-term development.

The policy’s vision of “mainstreaming menstrual hygiene within the school system” represents a shift toward empowering young girls with the knowledge, resources, and support they need to manage menstruation confidently and healthily. The Children’s Welfare Charitable Trust (TCWCT) is proud to support this transformation by working actively within the government schools and communities across India. Through the Organization’s extensive outreach, TCWCT has developed programs that not only address menstrual health but also foster an environment where young girls can learn about and manage their health without stigma or barriers.

TCWCT’s efforts in menstrual health go beyond education alone. In partnership with the Ministry of Women and Child Development, TCWCT team conducts workshops within the government schools and communities, focusing on raising awareness about menstrual health and hygiene. These programs are designed to equip students with the information they need to make informed decisions, understand their bodies, and recognize the importance of menstrual health.

In addition to these educational initiatives, TCWCT actively distributes essential hygiene resources such as sanitary napkins and hygiene kits in the government schools and community centers, especially in underserved areas. TCWCT ensures that young girls have consistent access to safe, reliable, and dignified options for menstrual care. TCWCT’s commitment to sustainability is also reflected in our emphasis on environmentally friendly menstrual products and disposal methods, which help girls and their families make choices that are both health-conscious and eco-friendly.

Beyond distribution, the organization promotes safe menstrual practices by collaborating with the government schools to improve the facilities and infrastructure available to female students. Working closely with local educators, the urban health resource centers, and the integrated child development(ICDS), TCWCT has contributed to the development of designated sanitary facilities and private disposal systems, ensuring that schools are equipped to provide a comfortable environment for menstruating students.

TCWCT remains steadfast in its dedication to improving menstrual health through direct action, educational outreach, and community partnerships. The Organization’s collaboration with government initiatives, like the Menstrual Hygiene Policy for School-Going Girls, strengthens our resolve to create lasting, positive changes in the lives of young girls across India.
